The end of the world as we know it.
It seems that nearly all post apocalyptic fiction right now is centered around zombies (such as The Walking Dead), or zombie like pandemics (The Last of Us). There are a couple of throwbacks to our fear of nuclear war last century (Wasteland, Fallout). And there’s The Road, which is a little unclear, but is almost certainly either meteor or nuclear war related.
The world of The Wanderer, however, explores a social collapse triggered by non-renewable resource depletion, which applies unbearable pressure to an already stretched financial system. An end to the era of cheap fuel and electricity triggers the end of ready access to cheap food too. Businesses fail and unemployment rises dramatically. People begin to turn on their government in anger. Eventually, in desperation, people turn on one another.
So there it is. No zombies, no mutants, no ghouls. In the world of The Wanderer, humans are more dangerous and frightening than anything supernatural.
